Cleanings

Professional Care and Prophyalxis- When you come in for your initial dental exam, we will evaluate your oral and periodontal (gum) health. If you do not have periodontal (gum) disease, you will receive a regular cleaning. A regular cleaning consists of the use of a gentle cleaning unit, called a cavitron along with a fine tuned cleaning with our dental instruments. You will then have your teeth flossed and polished with an application of fluoride. During your cleaning, we will go over your home hygiene practices. We recommend a dental cleaning every 6 months.

Scaling and Root Planing Procedure- When you come in your initial dental exam, we will evaluate your oral and periodontal (gum) health. If you have periodontal (gum) disease, you will receive scaling and root planning (deep cleaning). Patients who require a deep cleaning usually have bone loss around the teeth, heavy calculus (tarter) buildup with red, swollen and bleeding gums. A deep cleaning consists of numbing your mouth in order to remove the plaque and calculus (tarter) beneath the gums. Having your mouth numb makes the cleaning more comfortable. We will use a gentle cleaning unit, called a cavitron along with other dental instruments. After your deep cleaning, you will return in 4 weeks for a “Fine Scale”, which consists for re-evaluating your mouth for any calculus (tarter) that may appear after your gums have healed and start to tighten back around your teeth. We recommend that patients with periodontal (gum) disease come for dental cleanings (periodontal maintenance) every 3 months.
